Materials & Supplies Needed to Make Your Charlie Sling Bag:
Exterior Fabric (44” wide):
- View A: 1/2 yard (If you would like to use an accent fabric for the pocket & flap, you will need an additional 1/4 yard of fabric that is at least 22” wide. If you have trouble sewing through thick layers, using a lighter weight fabric for the pocket/flap is recommended.)
- View B: 1/2 yard
- View C: 1/2 yard (If you would like to use an accent fabric for the front pocket, you will need an additional 1/4 yard of fabric that is at least 9 inches wide.)
Lining Fabric (44" wide):
- View A: 3/4 yard
- Views B & C: 5/8 yard
Fusible Woven Interfacing (Pellon SF101 or similar - 20” wide):
- View A: 1-3/8 yard Adjust fusible interfacing requirement to 1-5/8 yards if you would like to interface the front pocket piece (recommended only if using a lighter weight fabric).
- View B: 1-5/8 yards
- View C: 1-1/2 yards
OPTIONAL Interlining (canvas, foam stabilizer or medium weight interfacing such as Pellon 809 - 17” wide minimum): 3/8 yard for all views
1-1/2" wide Cotton Webbing: 1-1/2 yards for all views (This webbing requirement will give you a maximum circumference (including the bag) of about 63 inches. Adjust requirement as needed to fit body.)
18” (or longer) Nylon Double Slide Handbag Zipper (1-1/4” zipper tape width) x 1 for all views
11” (or longer) Nylon Handbag Zipper (1-1/4” zipper tape width) x 1
5” Zipper (1” or 1-1/4” wide) for interior & back pockets x 2 for all views
(Handbag zippers are deliberately longer for ease of construction. Handbag zippers have nylon coils (not metal!) so you can sew over them. Longer lengths than the stated lengths above can be used if that is what you have on hand because they end up being trimmed down. If substituting zipper tape by the yard, you will need 7/8 yard with 3 zipper pulls for views A & C or 11/4 yard with 4 zipper pulls for view B.)
1” Wide D-Ring x 2 for all views
1-1/2” Wide Rectangle Strap Slider x 1 for all views
1-1/2” Wide Swivel Hook x 1 for all views
Size 24 Heavy Duty Metal Snap or 3/4” Magnetic Snap x 1 for views A & C only
1/2” Wide Double Fold Bias Tape: 2-1/4 yards for all views
OPTIONAL 1” wide cotton webbing for zipper tabs: 5 inches for all views
Suggested Fabrics: 7-9 oz. canvas or similar woven fabric for the exterior. Quilting weight cotton for lining.
Other Notions + Tools: Erasable fabric marker, ruler, thread, zipper foot, denim or Microtex needle, wonder clips, pins, stiletto (optional), iron, height compensation tool like a Jean-a-ma-jig or hump jumper (optional), snap setting tool if using a heavy duty snap.
